In a surprising move, the US State Department changed the name of the Peace Institute to the "Donald Trump Institute of Peace," describing him as the greatest negotiator, just before the signing of the Congo-Rwanda agreement.

Donald Trump appeared prominently on the facade of the US Institute of Peace building in Washington, DC, on Wednesday, on the eve of the institute hosting a historic peace agreement signing ceremony between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda.

The US State Department officially announced this change via its X platform account, where it posted a picture of the building with the new name, commenting: "This morning, the State Department renamed the Peace Institute in honor of the greatest negotiator in our nation's history. Welcome to the Donald Trump Institute of Peace.".

The history of the institute and the political paradox

This change comes at a time when the institute's history holds an interesting paradox regarding its relationship with President Trump. Founded in 1984 under former President Ronald Reagan , the institute was previously a target of Trump's austerity policies. Reports indicate that in the early months of his second term, the president attempted to dismantle parts of the institute and dismiss most of its officials as part of a restructuring of federal institutions, only for it to now be transformed into a monument bearing his name.

The institute is an independent federal organization funded by the U.S. government through Congress , and its primary mission is to prevent and peacefully resolve international conflicts. Until recently, the institute comprised a select group of researchers and specialists in international affairs and diplomacy, making it a leading strategic think tank in Washington.

Great Lakes Peace Agreement

The name change takes on particular significance as it coincides with a major diplomatic event hosted by the institute: the signing of the peace agreement between eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. President Donald Trump is scheduled to attend the ceremony in person, along with Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame.

This agreement is seen as a pivotal step towards ending decades of tension and armed conflict in the African Great Lakes region, an issue that the US administration has given special attention to in order to demonstrate Trump's ability to resolve complex international disputes.

Nobel Peace Prize ambitions

President Donald Trump makes no secret of his persistent ambition to win the Nobel Peace Prize, believing his diplomatic efforts surpass those of many previous laureates. He frequently cites his involvement in complex global issues, from tensions in the Gaza Strip and the long-standing conflict between India and Pakistan to border and political disputes in Southeast Asia between Cambodia and Thailand.

Observers believe that placing his name on the institute's facade represents a consolidation of his public image as a global "dealmaker," and an attempt to link his presidential legacy to the concept of direct international peace rather than traditional diplomacy.
