Veteran French coach Jean-Louis Gasset has passed away at the age of 72. Learn about his illustrious career with Montpellier, his partnership with Laurent Blanc at Paris Saint-Germain, and his experience with Ivory Coast.

On Friday, French club Montpellier announced the death of their former coach and one of their historical legends, Jean-Louis Gasset, at the age of 72, bringing to a close a remarkable career that spanned decades in French and international football, both as a player and as a seasoned coach.

The passing of Montpellier's distinguished son

The French sporting world received the news of Gasset's death with profound sadness, especially as he had recently concluded his third stint as manager of Montpellier, where he oversaw the team from October 2024 to April 2025. Gasset was more than just a passing figure in the club's history; he was an integral part of its DNA. He was the son of Bernard Gasset, who co-founded the club alongside its iconic president, Louis Nicollin. The club paid tribute to their departed son with heartfelt words, describing him as having left an "indelible mark" thanks to his professionalism and kindness, and offering their condolences to his son, Robin, currently an assistant coach of the first team, and to his entire family.

A golden partnership with Laurent Blanc

It's impossible to discuss Jean-Louis Gasset's career without mentioning his successful tactical partnership with coach Laurent Blanc. The duo formed a formidable force in French football, with Gasset serving as the mastermind and tactical strategist behind the scenes. This fruitful collaboration began at Bordeaux in 2007 and culminated in a historic treble (Ligue 1, Coupe de la Ligue, and Trophée des Champions) in 2009, restoring Bordeaux to the pinnacle of French football.

This partnership continued to the French national team (2010-2012), where Gasset helped rebuild "Les Bleus" after the setback of the 2010 World Cup. The success later moved to Paris Saint-Germain (2013-2016), where the team dominated domestic titles and delivered strong performances in Europe, and Gasset played a pivotal role in managing the stars and developing the style of play.

A diverse training career and international experience

Beyond his role as assistant coach, Gasset proved his competence as a head coach in challenging situations. He led Saint-Étienne (2017-2019) to impressive performances, took over Bordeaux in difficult circumstances, and had a brief but intense stint with Olympique Marseille in 2014, guiding them to the Europa League semi-finals.

On the international level, Gasset had an exciting experience with the Ivory Coast national team between 2022 and 2024. Despite leaving his post in the middle of the last African Cup of Nations tournament hosted by the country, the work he did in building the team and selecting players was the foundation upon which his successor, Emerse Faye, completed the continental title, giving Gasset a moral share in this historic achievement.

With the passing of Jean-Louis Gasset, French football loses a figure who combined sharp tactical intelligence, the ability to manage players, and loyalty to the clubs he worked for, so that his name will remain engraved in the memory of everyone who worked with him or supported him.
