The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued an important and urgent weather alert, warning of a severe cold wave directly affecting the Northern Borders region, specifically the city of Arar and the governorate of Tarif. The center explained in its report that this weather system will bring a significant and sharp drop in temperatures, with lows ranging from 0°C to -3°C, necessitating caution.
According to weather forecasts, the peak of this cold wave will begin at 2:00 AM on Sunday and continue until 8:00 AM the same day, a period that typically sees the lowest temperatures of the day. This sharp drop in temperature will be accompanied by frost, which may affect horizontal visibility and traffic flow on highways, in addition to other environmental impacts.
Geographical and climatic context of the region
This cold wave is occurring within the normal climatic context of the Northern Borders region, particularly in the province of Tarif, which has historically been considered one of the coldest areas in Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Peninsula. This is due to its high geographical location and its exposure to air currents from the north, making it a corridor for cold polar air masses coming from Siberia or Eastern Europe during the winter.
Historical climate records indicate that the Tarf region has previously recorded record temperatures in previous years, reaching very low levels. This makes the region's residents constantly on alert during the winter months to deal with these harsh conditions, by preparing appropriate heating methods and taking home safety measures.
Expected effects and safety measures
The impact of sub-zero temperatures is not limited to the feeling of cold, but extends to multiple aspects of daily life and the economy:
- Road safety: The formation of frost in the early morning hours leads to vehicles skidding on highways, requiring drivers to exercise extreme caution and reduce speed.
- The agricultural and pastoral sector: Frost poses a real threat to exposed crops, and the severe cold affects livestock, which requires farmers and livestock breeders in the desert to provide suitable shelter and heating for animals to protect them from death or disease.
- Public health: These conditions increase the likelihood of contracting winter illnesses and colds, especially among children and the elderly, which raises the importance of wearing heavy winter clothing and avoiding direct drafts.
The relevant authorities, including the Civil Defense, call on citizens and residents to follow safety guidelines when using various heating methods, whether electric or based on coal and firewood, to ensure the ventilation of enclosed spaces and avoid suffocation or fires that may result from misuse during cold winter nights.
