Celta Vigo continued their resurgence in the Spanish league with a big 4-1 win over Valencia, moving closer to the European places, while Valencia's crisis worsened as they became threatened with relegation.

Celta Vigo continued their impressive run in La Liga, securing a resounding and well-deserved 4-1 victory over Valencia on Saturday in the 18th round of matches. This win was more than just three points; it confirmed the Galician side's recent resurgence in form.

Match details and goal scenario

The match had an exciting start, as Valencia came very close to opening the scoring in the seventh minute when the referee awarded them a penalty kick, but bad luck plagued midfielder Pepello, whose shot hit the left post, missing a golden opportunity for the visitors to take the lead.

The punishment came harshly from the home side, as veteran Borja Iglesias turned the tables, opening the scoring for Celta Vigo from a penalty in the 33rd minute, before returning at the start of the second half to strengthen his team's lead with the second goal in the 59th minute. Celta's attacking machine did not stop there, as substitutes, the promising Moroccan Younes Elabdellaoui and Hugo Álvarez, added the third and fourth goals in the 83rd and 90+4 minutes, to conclude the goal fest.

Celta Vigo's European ambitions

With this third victory in their last four matches, Celta Vigo raised their points tally to 26, strengthening their hold on seventh place. These results are of paramount importance to the club, which is now putting significant pressure on sixth-placed Real Betis (who occupy the final Europa League qualifying spot), with the gap between them reduced to just one point. This intensifies the competition for European places, especially given Betis's upcoming tough match against Real Madrid.

Valencia's historic crisis worsens

On the other hand, Valencia, one of Spain's most prestigious clubs, is going through a difficult period unworthy of its illustrious history. The heavy defeat has left "Los Che" stuck on 16 points in 17th place, teetering on the brink of relegation, just one point above the drop zone currently occupied by Girona. This situation has placed the club's management and coaching staff under immense pressure from fans and the media to rectify the situation before it's too late and they slip into the second division.

The Basque derby ends in a draw

In another match in the same round, the Basque derby between Osasuna and Athletic Bilbao ended in a 1-1 draw. Rubén García gave the home side the lead in the 34th minute, before Gorka Goroseta equalized for Bilbao in the 71st minute. With this result, Bilbao moved up to eighth place with 24 points, while Osasuna reached twelfth place with 19 points, thus halting Bilbao's run of two consecutive defeats.
