A powerful storm hits California, causing the evacuation of hundreds and warnings of flooding and mudslides in fire-affected areas, with travel expected to be disrupted during the Christmas holiday.

California is facing severe weather as a powerful winter storm lashed large parts of the state Tuesday night, forcing hundreds of residents to evacuate their homes amid growing fears of catastrophic flooding and landslides. These weather developments come at a critical time, coinciding with the Christmas holiday, and threaten to disrupt travel plans for millions of Americans.

Warnings of traffic gridlock and weather hazards

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued an urgent warning of continued heavy rain, snow, and strong winds through Friday. The warnings covered areas in the north, central, and southern parts of the state, urging residents to take extra precautions.

In a press statement, meteorologist Ariel Cohen addressed a direct message to residents of Los Angeles and surrounding areas, advising them to reconsider their holiday travel plans, noting that highways and valleys could experience extremely dangerous conditions.

Risk of mudslides in fire zones

This storm is doubly dangerous because of the environmental context California has experienced this year. According to state officials, 2025 saw a devastating wildfire season that killed 31 people and burned more than 212,551 hectares. The areas affected by these fires, particularly in Los Angeles and the Pacific Palisades, suffer from soil stripping of vegetation, making them vulnerable to debris flows or mudslides once the ground becomes saturated with water.

Los Angeles County officials confirmed that areas damaged by wildfires last January remain a major hazard, as the soil cannot absorb the large amounts of rain expected, which could reach 30.5 centimeters in some southern areas.

Heavy snow and strong winds

The dangers are not limited to rain, as the highlands are experiencing heavy snowfall. In the Sierra Nevada mountain range, on the eastern border of the state, 30 centimeters of snow have been recorded, with snow accumulation expected to reach about 152 centimeters before the storm subsides, which could lead to the closure of vital mountain passes.

These phenomena are accompanied by strong winds that can reach speeds of up to 88 kilometers per hour. Experts warned that the combination of waterlogged soil and high winds significantly increases the likelihood of large trees and power lines falling, threatening widespread power outages and posing a direct danger to lives and property.

Emergency procedures

In response to these threats, authorities issued evacuation orders for more than 200 homes on Tuesday night, and law enforcement and emergency teams raised their alert level to maximum in most parts of Los Angeles County, in anticipation of any emergency that may result from this storm, which is one of the strongest storms to hit the region this season.
