As part of the ongoing efforts of Saudi security forces to enforce the rule of law and protect the Kingdom's borders, the General Directorate of Mujahideen in the Asir region announced the arrest of a Pakistani resident. His arrest came after he was found to be transporting five individuals, all Ethiopian nationals, in violation of border security regulations, using his personal vehicle to facilitate their illegal entry into the country.
All the accused were apprehended, and initial legal procedures were initiated against them. In accordance with established procedures, the five violators were referred to the competent authority responsible for handling border security violations, while their transporter was handed over to the Public Prosecution for further investigation and application of the penalties stipulated by law.
Background of security efforts to combat infiltration
This operation is part of a broader series of security campaigns conducted by Saudi Arabia throughout the year, aimed at enhancing security and combating border infiltration and illegal residency. The "A Nation Without Violators" campaign, launched by the Saudi Ministry of Interior, is a prime example of these efforts. It aims to regularize the status of violators or deport them, while imposing strict penalties on anyone who harbors, transports, or employs them. These campaigns are particularly important in southern border regions such as Asir, Jazan, and Najran, given their rugged terrain, which could be exploited by smuggling networks.
The importance and implications of implementing the system
The firm implementation of border security measures has far-reaching implications beyond direct security; it extends to significant economic and social dimensions. Domestically, these measures contribute to maintaining labor market stability and protecting job opportunities for citizens and legal residents, while also curbing crimes that may be linked to undocumented workers. Regionally, these operations send a clear message about the Kingdom's commitment to securing its borders and preventing their exploitation for illicit purposes, including combating organized crime and human trafficking.
Deterrent penalties for violators and accomplices
Official authorities, represented by the spokesperson for the General Directorate of Mujahideen, emphasized that leniency towards those who violate border security regulations is a major crime. They affirmed that anyone who facilitates the entry of violators into the Kingdom, or provides them with transportation, shelter, or any other form of assistance, is subject to severe penalties, including imprisonment for up to 15 years and a fine of up to one million Saudi riyals. Furthermore, penalties include confiscation of the vehicle and accommodation used in the crime, and public shaming of those involved. These crimes are considered major offenses warranting arrest and are considered breaches of honor and integrity, reflecting their serious threat to public safety. Authorities urged citizens and residents to immediately report any violations via the designated numbers: 911 in the Makkah, Riyadh, and Eastern regions, and 999 and 996 in the rest of the Kingdom.
