The Special Forces for Environmental Security announced the arrest of a citizen who violated environmental regulations by damaging vegetation through fires set in unauthorized areas within the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve. The forces confirmed that legal procedures were applied to the violator and he was referred to the relevant authorities.

The Kingdom's efforts to protect the environment

This measure comes in the context of the tireless efforts made by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to protect its natural environment and achieve environmental sustainability, which is one of the main pillars of Saudi Vision 2030. The Special Forces for Environmental Security were established in 2019 as the executive arm of the Ministry of Interior to enforce environmental regulations, and to monitor and control violations that threaten wildlife and biodiversity in various regions of the Kingdom, including the vast royal reserves.

The importance of the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve

Established by royal decree in 2018, the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve is one of the largest reserves in the Middle East, spanning a vast area in the northwestern region of the Kingdom. The reserve aims to reintroduce endangered species such as the Arabian leopard, Arabian oryx, and sand gazelle, as well as restore ecological balance and revitalize natural vegetation that has deteriorated over decades. Protecting the vegetation in this reserve is not only aesthetically valuable but also essential for the survival of the entire ecosystem, providing food and shelter for wildlife and contributing to combating desertification and improving air quality.

Local and regional impact of environmental monitoring

The firm application of penalties for such violations sends a clear message about the Kingdom's commitment to preserving its natural resources. Domestically, this measure serves as a strong deterrent to anyone tempted to harm the environment and enhances public awareness of the importance of protecting national parks and reserves. Regionally and internationally, these steps reflect the Kingdom's commitment to its ambitious initiatives, such as the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative, and underscore its role as an active player in global efforts to combat climate change and protect biodiversity.

Details of the penalties and a call for social responsibility

The forces clarified that the penalty for lighting fires in undesignated areas within forests and national parks is a fine of up to 3,000 Saudi Riyals. They also noted the apprehension of another violator in the Imam Abdulaziz bin Mohammed Royal Reserve for entering restricted areas with his vehicle, an offense punishable by a fine of up to 2,000 Riyals. The forces urged citizens and residents to immediately report any violations against the environment or wildlife by calling the designated numbers: 911 in the Makkah, Riyadh, and Eastern regions, and 999 and 996 in the rest of the Kingdom, emphasizing that environmental protection is a shared responsibility requiring everyone's cooperation.
