The Saudi Minister of Industry discusses with the head of China’s BYD opportunities to localize the electric vehicle industry in the Kingdom and enhance supply chains within the objectives of Vision 2030.

In a strategic move that bolsters Saudi Arabia's ambitions in the advanced industries sector, the Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources, Bandar Al-Khorayef, held a significant meeting on Tuesday with Wang Xuanfu, founder and chairman of BYD, the leading Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer. The meeting, which was also attended by the CEO of the National Center for Industrial Development, Engineer Saleh Al-Salmi, focused on exploring avenues for joint cooperation and the transfer of technical expertise to localize the automotive industry in the Kingdom.

Strengthening strategic partnerships and localizing technology

During the meeting, the two sides discussed ways to deepen cooperation in the industrial sector, with a particular focus on promising investment opportunities in the electric vehicle industry. This approach comes in response to the growing local and regional demand for environmentally friendly vehicles and aims to solidify the Kingdom's position as a global logistics and industrial hub. The discussion also addressed mechanisms for transferring the latest technologies possessed by BYD, currently one of the world's leading competitors in the new energy market, to ensure the development of an integrated industrial ecosystem within the Kingdom.

A stimulating investment environment and advanced infrastructure

Minister Al-Khorayef reviewed the attractive incentives and enabling factors that the Kingdom offers to investors in high value-added sectors. He highlighted the significant government investments in infrastructure, particularly the expanding electric vehicle charging networks, which are being extended to cover all regions of the Kingdom, paving the way for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. These steps are an integral part of the National Industrial Strategy, which aims to increase the industrial sector's contribution to the GDP.

Integration between mining and the automotive industry

The mining sector was a key focus of the discussions, with a review of the objectives of the comprehensive strategy for mining and mineral industries. The Kingdom places paramount importance on linking the mining sector to the automotive industry by utilizing local mineral resources in the manufacture of car batteries and advanced materials. This integration aims to strengthen local supply chains and reduce reliance on imports, giving Saudi industry a significant competitive advantage, particularly given the availability of essential minerals for clean energy technologies.

Promising economic and future dimensions

This meeting comes at a crucial time, preceding the launch of the fifth edition of the International Mining Conference in Riyadh, reflecting the Kingdom's comprehensive vision for linking raw materials to finished products. These initiatives align with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to diversify the national economy and create quality job opportunities for Saudi youth, in addition to the Kingdom's commitment to global environmental standards and reducing carbon emissions through the adoption of sustainable transportation solutions.
