Scattered rain, ranging from light to moderate, fell today on the Al-Baha region and its governorates, accompanied by active thunderstorms that gave the atmosphere a distinctly wintry feel. The rain covered large parts of the governorates of Al-Makhwah, Qalwah, Ghamid Al-Zanad, and Al-Hajrah, in addition to their affiliated administrative centers and a number of the region's renowned natural parks.
The climatic context of the Al-Baha region
The Al-Baha region, nestled within the Sarawat Mountains in southwestern Saudi Arabia, boasts a temperate climate and stunning natural beauty, making it a prime tourist destination, particularly during the summer months. This period is considered relatively rainy in the southwestern highlands, where the mountainous terrain contributes to the formation of cumulonimbus clouds and rainfall, often accompanied by thunderstorms. These rains are part of the weather pattern predicted by the National Center of Meteorology, which affects various parts of the Kingdom during the transitional periods between seasons.
The importance of rainfall and its local impact
These rains played a vital role in revitalizing the region, causing several valleys and tributaries to flow, such as Wadi Al-Mald and Wadi Al-Ahsabah, among other well-known wadis. As a result, agricultural lands and green spaces were irrigated, promising a bountiful harvest for the crops for which Al-Baha is famous, such as pomegranates, grapes, and apricots. This will also enhance the vegetation cover, which is a primary source of grazing for livestock and the production of high-quality local honey.
On the environmental and tourism fronts, these rains contribute to raising water levels in dams and replenishing groundwater wells, thus supporting the region's water security. They also create stunning natural landscapes, turning mountains green and enhancing the appeal of parks and forests such as Raghadan Forest and Al-Shukran Park. This is expected to positively impact domestic tourism, aligning with the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 to revitalize the tourism sector.
Warnings and alerts from relevant authorities
With the rainy weather, the Civil Defense Directorate and relevant authorities renewed their warnings to citizens and residents, urging them to take precautions and stay away from valleys, floodplains, and low-lying areas that could pose a danger during heavy rainfall. The National Center of Meteorology also called on everyone to follow its weather alerts for the latest updates on the rain situation, in order to ensure everyone's safety.
