Aissa Mandi confirms that the past is behind them and that Algeria is determined to regain the Africa Cup of Nations title, amid strong preparations to face Burkina Faso after the opening victory over Sudan.

In a display of remarkable maturity and self-confidence, veteran defender Aïssa Mandi stole the spotlight from his national team coach, Bosnian-Swiss Vladimir Petković, during the pre-match press conference ahead of the highly anticipated game against Burkina Faso. Mandi's answers were characterized by calmness and composure, reflecting his defensive solidity and insightful vision as one of the leaders of Algeria's golden generation.

Experience in facing the challenges of the "CAN"

The 34-year-old Mandi affirmed that the Algerian national team is determined to "go far and recapture the glory of 2019," indicating that the team has turned a new page with a different dynamic under new coaching staff at the Africa Cup of Nations currently being held in Morocco. Mandi is considered one of the key players who orchestrated the Cairo epic in 2019, when Algeria won the continental title for the second time in its history, following their 1990 triumph.

In his remarks, the Lille defender emphasized the importance of overcoming past disappointments, a clear reference to Algeria's first-round exits in the last two editions of the tournament, where the team failed to secure a single victory, managing only three draws and three losses. Mandi confidently stated, "We've turned the page on the past, learned our lesson, and we're here with renewed ambitions and a blend of experience and youth.".

A strong start and a successful career

Mandi's words carry particular weight given his illustrious professional career, which began with French club Reims, then moved to Spain with Real Betis and Villarreal, before returning to France with Lille. Regarding his sixth appearance in the continental tournament, he said: "I know very well how to handle pressure and guide young players. The resounding 3-0 victory over Sudan gave us a huge morale boost.".

The victory over Sudan in the first round is a significant turning point, as it is Algeria’s first victory in the finals since the historic win over Senegal in the 2019 final, breaking the curse that had plagued the team in previous opening matches.

The battle for the lead against the Burkinabe horses

All eyes are now on the crucial match against Burkina Faso, where Algeria will be looking to secure early qualification for the round of 16. Coach Petkovic acknowledged the difficulty of the game, praising the opponent's strong identity and the cohesion among its players. Petkovic said, "We will be facing a physically and mentally strong team, and we must maintain our focus for the full ninety minutes.".

On the other hand, Burkina Faso coach Brahim Traoré made no secret of his high ambitions, asserting that his team came to compete for the title. Traoré pointed to the competitive history between the two sides, recalling the thrilling draws in the previous edition and the World Cup qualifiers, promising a high-caliber tactical match between two teams that know each other well.
