On the 26th of Ramadan 1438 AH, corresponding to June 21, 2017, a royal decree was issued appointing Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz as Crown Prince .
The decree, number A/255, was issued on 26/9/1438 AH.
The text of the decision reads as follows:
With the help of God Almighty
We, Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud
King of Saudi Arabia
Based on the justifications presented to the members of the Allegiance Council and the overwhelming support of the members of the Allegiance Council, by a majority of (31) out of (34).
In accordance with the teachings of Islamic Sharia, which stipulate the obligation to hold fast to the rope of God and cooperate in His guidance, and to be keen on taking the legitimate and systematic means to achieve national unity and cohesion and solidarity for the good, and based on the legitimate principles upon which the system of government in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been established, and in care of the state’s entity and its future and to guarantee – with God Almighty’s help – its continuity on the foundations upon which it was established to serve the religion, then the country and the people, and what is good for its loyal people.
Having reviewed the Basic Law of Governance, issued by Royal Order No. (A/90) dated 8/27/1412 AH.
After reviewing the Allegiance Council System issued by Royal Order No. (A/135) dated 9/26/1427 AH.
After reviewing Royal Order No. (A/52) dated 3/4/1436 AH.
After reviewing Royal Order No. (A/160) dated 10/6/1436 AH, which was supported by the vast majority of the members of the Allegiance Council to choose His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud to be the Crown Prince.
Based on what the public interest requires.
We were commanded to do the following:
First: His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Nayef bin Abdulaziz Al Saud is relieved of his position as Crown Prince, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior.
Second: The selection of His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud as Crown Prince, and his appointment as Deputy Prime Minister while continuing as Minister of Defense, and continuing in the other tasks assigned to him.
Third: This order of ours shall be communicated to the relevant authorities for approval and implementation.
