The National Center for Environmental Compliance has threatened to impose fines of up to 20 million riyals on those who violate the regulations for permits to inject treated wastewater into groundwater wells , in order to protect water resources from pollution.
The center explained that failure to comply with the approved environmental requirements is a “serious violation” that warrants strict legal accountability, due to its dangerous consequences for the environmental balance.
He explained that the penalties range from 10,000 riyals to a maximum of two million riyals, based on the size of the violation, the amount of pollutants, and the duration of the violation.
Financial penalties
The center pointed out that the penalties are not limited to deterrent financial fines, but extend to obligating violators to remove the effects of the violation and address the damages resulting from it immediately.
He added that the violator is also responsible for paying all prescribed compensations, in accordance with applicable regulations, to repair the damage caused by pollution to natural resources.
Specific controls
The center stressed the importance of all facilities and individuals adhering to the specified regulations to ensure the protection of groundwater and reduce the risks resulting from irregular practices.
He stressed that implementing these decisive measures directly contributes to the sustainability of natural resources and the preservation of the environment for future generations.
